The very first Wandsworthian publication, advertised a notice at the end of the edition for Christmas Shopping!
The notice gave show stopping reasons for going to Oldham “Big Two Street”, which was not only that they were selling Gobstoppers, but also that the hairdressers were offering ‘Bobbing and Shingling’
This style was the height of fashion at the hairdressers in the 1920's:
Bobbing was a very short bob hair cut also known as the ‘Eton Crop’. Shingling was a bob hair cut that covered the ears and was cut to ‘V’ at the back.
The ‘notice’ also put that the ‘wireless’ would be on too, which meant that the radio would be on ( a different kind of technological connection from today!) A real treat…
