Trips of 2004
2004: an American Odyssey
In many ways the America trip was exciting, not only because of amusing episodes such as Caster trying to eat his weight in chicken, or James Augustine being told by a waitress that, no, he couldn't have apple juice: "This isn't 'babyland'!" - but also because it defeated expectations and preconceptions and offered an insight into American culture and ideals.
From New York we travelled to Baltimore, a bright city with excellent shopping by the harbour. First stop was the Civil War museum. It was during the Baltimore riots that the first fatalities of the Civil War occurred - the first of the 620,000 deaths of this conflict, the bloodiest in American history. The following day, the tone was lightened by a shopping trip to n out-of-town mall - which had a mile-long circuit of shops (not to mention a 24-screen cinema complex). Washington was our next port of call, then moving on again, we entered the rugged hills and rolling greenery of Virginia, the backdrop to much of the Civil War.
